Match Report - 04 Oct 2008, Old Wykehamist Football Club 2nd XI beat Old Cholmeleians IV

6 of the best - Magicians cast spell over Apprentice

We arrived amid rumours that our oppo. had been stuffed 10-1 by a team we had already dismantled 4-1 on the opening day of the season. Thus, there was little that Captain Hardiman could say to prevent us entering the game in anything other than bouyant and arrogant mood. Such was the paucity of the opposition that the OW swagger did not result in the usual banana skin that such attidutes can lure OWs into.

A much altered side (the 1sts had done some poaching) made little difference as the midfield and strikers bombed forward from the off. A healthy wind meant that the final ball lacked quality for the first 20 minutes but the solid defence and workhorses in centre mid ensured that no chances were proferred and that it was only a matter of time before the OWs bundled the ball home. And so it was that Godwin sneaked up from the back to ram one home from inside the six yard box. The rout had begun. A minute later Bjorn (unselfishly playing wide right to give others a chance up front) capitalised on some poor communication in the box to chalked up number two.

Keen not to experience double figures again the OCs got stuck in for the next 20 minutes, keeping the defence busy and showing up the lazy OW wide men who were more enthusiatsic going forward than back. During this time Alfie paid the price for too much running and limped off (to be replaced by debutant and MOTM Roger Coleman).

However, a hand ball in the box gave the OWs a chance to go three clear by the half. Underwood stepped up (following his promotion from right back to centre mid) and duly passed the ball to the keeper. A sporting gesture born out of the sheer the gulf in class. However, a minute later Bjorn showed no such sentiment and on the stroke of half time tucked away a neat header following a pin point corner from David DeLanoy.

Cruising at half time and things were only to get better. Coleman forced home his first. Then minutes later tapped in his second as the keeper parried Bjorn's selfish search for a hat-trick and finally calmly slotted his third following a sweet move which saw the ball swept from back to front in a matter of seconds before a pin point pass from the author sent the new hero on his way. It was as quick and simple as that. A second half hatrick - that sounds familiar (please see match report of opening game against KCS for similar heroics).

6-0 and about 20 minutes to go. Surely Foster and Underwood would open their accounts... But alas it was not to be as each held their heads on a numerous occasions as the ball just wouldn't go. Harder and harder they tried but to no avail. Even Foster's peach of a volley was just too good a connection to trouble the keeper. Bjorn did speculate from fully 35 yards, but alas the cross bar denied him glory and a place in OW folklore.

It was only left for the Apprentice contestant (referred to in the title), who had been ineffectually walking around at left back to limp off to a chorus of y'fired. Well someone must have shouted that.

Credit should go to the back four and Duncan for ensuring that we could attack solidly for 90 minutes. The midfield, as mentioned, did leave them rather exposed at times.

Top of the table after three we now become the hunted. These are heady and yet dangerous time for the Hampshire boys...
