OWFC vs Aldenham match report now available via fixtures page
01 Oct 2012
OWFC 1st XI had their first game on Fortress Bulls Drove at the weekend, but were unable to prevent a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aldenham. Waki demonstrated that just because something was one of the '5 Things We Learnt' doesn't mean he has to act upon it, turning up 10 minutes before kick off, but with the kit this time. Posh Ref was back at the helm after two weeks of Anal Ref, so socks were taped all the colours of the rainbow.
OWFC had the better of the opening exchanges; the stout midfield three of Prichard, Merriot and England dominating the centre. Mase curled a trademark free-kick inches wide of the post, then Aldenham's keeper saved well at his near post after Jif's flick-on from an Underwood throw was nearly bundled in. At around the mid point of the first half OWFC took the lead they deserved. A half cleared corner was lobbed back into the 6 yard box by The Muleā¢, the keeper couldn't gather under pressure from Jif and Rob England, and the latter's shoulder bobbled the ball into the net. Defenders nowhere, OW's in the lead.
Passing the ball around with relaxed ease, OWFC were in danger of getting a little cocky in their approach, and this proved their undoing just before half time. Ignoring the universal Sunday league maxim of "Not there!!!", some slightly casual play on the edge of their own box resulted in a low shot which Ed Duncan could only push out, and the rebound was bundled in by the onrushing winger. All square at half time.
Having been the better side in the opening period OW's were confident of getting back on top in the second half, but the next 45 were a very different business. All the comfortable possession of the first half vanished, and Aldenham were piling on the pressure down the Bulls Drove slope. Their scrappy, speedy right winger cut inside the box and his low curler was just turned round the post. Several dangerous looking shots were blocked by valiant defenders, and a high drive was tipped over. The odd chance still came our way, including a crisp long range shot from Masefield and some fancy play between Rob England and JIF which finished in a shot just over the bar, but it was Aldenham who grabbed the winner with about 10 minutes to go. A shot from a near post corner was saved by Duncan but as with their earlier goal, Aldenham were first to the rebound.
A late long range drive from Nigel Day nearly crept through via a deflection, but OWFC were unable to create another clear cut chance, despite Aldenham sportingly playing the last 10 minutes with what looked like a drunked 47 year old up front.
Haileybury away next week so keen to get a strong side out with plenty of subs. Like Alan Partridge, we need to bounce back.
