30th Sept 2017: both sides lose narrowly *clenched_fist_emoji*

30 Sep 2017

A “what might have been” weekend for the O-Dubs as both the 1s and 2s went down to unfortunate defeats.
King’s College Wimbledon 1-0 OW 1s
Bancroftians 5-1 OW 2s

The OWs bounced back from their opening day 5-0 drubbing by Chigwell with a better performance and came very close to taking something from the game. An even first half saw the Dubs unlucky to go in 1-0 down. Hugo Sever looked strong at the back with Mercer, with Gabe Tiplady back from injury slotting into left-back.

Ollie Mitchell was dangerous from the left in the 2nd half, when goalkeeper Ben Pringle made an inspiring penalty save to keep it 1-0. The last 20 minutes saw an assault on the KCW goal, with a trademark 40-yard hit from Essex inches over, before he hit the post late on.

The positives will be taken into a huge match against Malborough next Saturday.

Sam Cheetham writes of the 2s match:

On field report:

The boys travelled all the way to Essex on Saturday. This journey was a test of Wykehamist common sense - we struggled. Then we played footballand after 45 minutes some cracking saves from James Gray, very good defending from our make shift centre back pairing of James Parker and Alex Hardiman, some solid fluid work between our midfield trio of Ronny Cubitt, Peter Elphick and Nick Opherman and a very neat finish by captain and left back Sam Cheetham brought us to the break 1-1 and looking solid.

Second half - we struggled. Some silly mistakes and a very good number 10 on their side cost us dearly final score 5-1. But for a couple of subs that we didn't have the score could have been VERY different. We simply ran out of steam. Summary, real improvements being made for the 2's - MORE PLAYERS NEEDED.

Off field report:

We excelled. Some excellent post match beers.

Team MoM: Peter Elphick - the man is really starting to blossom in the middle of the park.

The team performance in the bar and then the tube home was outstanding - we will build on this and move forwards.
