06 Nov 2016

Week 6 Review - 22nd October 2016

Old Wyks 1s   3 - 0   Old Bradfieldian 1s

Goals: Donald (2), Portz;   MoM: Donald

A truly beautiful performance capped by a spectacular team goal to bury the game late on. Nothing more to say than it was a masterclass in patient production.

Old Wyks 2s   2 - 3   Old Stoic 1s

Goals: Cheetham, Mitchell;   MoM: Will Rowley

In a heartbreaking finale, played on the hallowed Bulls Drove turf, the OW twos were denied a valuable point as the referee raised his arm in dispute to Ollie Mitchell's last second volley into the net. It was the cherry on a cake of severely dubious decisions from the centre-circle bound official.

Nonetheless, we can have little complaint about the quagmire we found ourselves in at half time. Indeed, having fallen 3-0 behind due to some rapid breakaways, a fine volley, and an inept GK (Williams) flailing at a miscued cross, the OWs were fortunate to have nicked one back through a Sam Cheetham wonder-strike following typically determined work from Paddy Lloyd.

With only ten minutes to go and the score still at 3-1, the OW 1s, having polished off their stunning victory, rallied to our cause. Their support galvanised our previously lacklustre effort and all of a sudden the Stoics were in full retreat with David Prichard harassing inexorably. Wave after wave of attack ensued with Ollie Mitchell, up front having started at LB, tucking a superb finish away to give hope of getting something from the game.

As we entered stoppage time, it was the brilliant Will Rowley (MoM), marauding from the heart of the now 3-man defence, who swept in a truly sublime cross met by the blessed boot of Mitchell that sent the crowd into raptures. Only for the cruel mustachioed mistress of fate to have "allegedly" seen a foul. Painful, when he had quoted Wenger in his defence of a missed penalty early in the second half "I suspect it was, but I didn't see it".

In the sanctity of our beautiful Hampshire hideaway, the old foe rolled us in the cup leaving a bitter taste that even the delights of The Queen could not curb.
