Match Report - 03 Mar 2018, Old Wykehamist Football Club 2nd XI beat Old Rugbeians

On the back of an impressive win the 2s knew what was needed to stay in the fight for survival: another 3 points. The weather was grim and the opposition sat a whopping 18 points above us in second place. To say this was a tough ask was an understatement.

The team stood up and and gradually got better and better as the game progressed. First half ended 2-1 to Rugby with the highlight being an Al Hardiman header, his first goal since 2009/10 season, to keep us within reach!

Second half we were against the wind and agreed we had to keep the ball on the deck and pass it if we were to stand a chance. Something just clicked and with Kaz Fushimi, John Wilson and Gabe Tiplady in the middle it was seriously naize to watch the football that ensued. Our back four grew in confidence also and passed the ball silkily along the back with George Hobhouse, Will Rowley and Peter Elphick looking classier by the second. Up top a rotation of James Ross Skinner, Tom Vernon, Cheetham and Teddy Golding seemed to be causing some serious problems by stretching the defence and with 60 mins gone the inevitable equaliser was scored by Wilson after a passing move starting all the way from the ‘keeper.

Rugby started to come back hard at us and the maverick, solid and assured goalkeeping of Rollo Quinault kept us in the game. However with 4 minutes to go OWs knew a draw would send them down; a win was the only option. Men piled forward and the dominant Wilson surged forwards to neatly slot the ball past the keeper with a minute to go. We hung on and the team went wild.

Another week in the hunt for safety - dare we believe?
