Match Report - 19 Nov 2016, Old Wykehamist Football Club 2nd XI beat Kings College Wimbledon III
Last weekend, the Old Wykehamist Seconds against the King's College Wimbledon Thirds kicked off under a beautiful autumn sky, with the red clouds promising the rain to come. The OWs seemed in good fettle, and a sharp Wilson put in the first. King’s answered by pushing through the Wykehamical flanks, prompting some early work for Al Hardiman in goal. After a shaky period, Morgan, Bouch and Paddy straightened things out, and Hugo Saunders grabbed the second with a sublime strike to the back post. Aspiring horticulturalist and player-manager Freddie Blackett raised fine plants either side of half time, while the King’s left back made a number of ironic jokes, which were sadly lost on the opposition.
With the already low sun now setting behind the opponents' goal, the Wykehamical men kicked up a notch, playing some beautiful pass and move, and allowing Hugo to get his second. With the move forward, however, rear lines were exposed, and Kings managed to get two lucky goals back; only the strong mitt of Hardiman kept out a third. With the game in its embers, Hugo achieved a lifetime ambition by scoring direct from a corner and tucked away the game's seventh – and his third – with one of the final touches of a most enjoyable game.
