Match Report - 15 Sep 2012, Old Wykehamist Football Club 1st XI lost to Old Salopians
The 1s had a hard fought game up in Uxbridge at the weekend. With a depleted squad there were a couple of début performances. Ed Foster stepped in and worked tirelessly as a lone striker. Rupert Mercer also came into the fray after being roped in at the 11th hour on Friday evening, and gave a very solid performance at centre back.
The sides were evenly matched in the first half, OWFC containing Salopians' intricate manoeuvres easily while threatening from set pieces and the odd wonder ball from Mule. It remained 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, the game opened up a bit as OWFC started to pass the ball better themselves, and put together some decent moves with Hogan and Merriott at the heart of much. But Salopians' broke the deadlock first, a long diagonal ball dropping between a retreating defence and a slow to emerge keeper and tucked away.
But OWFC responded well, continuing to play our football, and were rewarded for our efforts by Sam Donald's accurately guided long range strike with 8 minutes remaining, past a keeper lured out of position by a hanging cross. Sadly though we were undone by a well executed set piece in the last minute for a final score of 2-1.
Given the searing heat and only one sub to their three it was a huge effort from everyone against a strong Salopian team. Plenty of positives to be taken into the next match to notch up the first of the season.
